About the Item
A powerful 20th-century cast bronze Expressionist bust, imbued with raw psychological energy and sculptural immediacy. Evocative of The Scream by Edvard Munch, the distorted features and open-mouthed tension suggest a profound inner state captured in metal. The bust is executed in a dramatic, stylized fashion that reflects the core tenets of Expressionism—form shaped by feeling rather than strict realism.
This piece appears to be an artist’s studio casting, not a foundry-finished edition. Its texture, surface variation, and unrefined edges suggest it was made with direct involvement by the sculptor, possibly as a one-off or artist proof. It once likely sat atop a marble plinth, now missing, but it reads beautifully as a freestanding work.
The sculpture was almost certainly created using the traditional lost-wax casting process (cire-perdue), a technique developed in antiquity and still used by fine artists today. In this method, the artist first models the piece in wax, which is then encased in a refractory mold. When the mold is fired, the wax melts and drains away—hence "lost"—and molten bronze is poured into the void. Once cooled, the mold is broken away to reveal the raw metal form.
From there, the bronze undergoes finishing and chasing, where tools are used to refine the surface—removing sprues, sharpening details, smoothing or emphasizing textures, and preparing the surface for patination. These final stages are as much a part of the creative process as the modeling itself, with many sculptors closely involved in how the piece emerges from the fire and is finished by hand.
This bust carries the spirit of 20th-century Expressionist sculpture, where artists rejected idealized classical forms in favor of distortion, asymmetry, and emotional resonance. Figures are bent, stretched, fragmented—representing the human soul in extremis rather than the body in repose.
Today, figurative art is experiencing a powerful resurgence. Collectors and artists alike are returning to the body as a vessel for narrative, trauma, humor, memory, and myth. This bust—imperfect, intense, and full of life—fits squarely within that lineage.
