Fine Almost Life Size 1940's Plaster Comedy and Tragedy Theater Masks Sculptures
About the Item
An almost antique pair of plaster comedy and tragedy theater masks. With incredible details, ultra-expressive countenances and wonderful scale, this duo evokes all the emotions. The plaster forms each have beautiful patina. There are integrated metal hangers at the tops of each mask. We have all seen these type of theatre masks before, but how many of us know the history? I, for one, did not but thanks to the Greek Designers website I have some information to share with you, "The two masks are associated with ancient greek drama with the smiling and frowning faces. They are the Comedy and Tragedy masks that were worn in ancient Greece during the golden age, around 500 – 300 BC, and are paired together to show the two extremes of the human psyche. The Comedy mask is known as Thalia, who in Greek mythology is the Muse of Comedy and Idyllic Poetry, portrayed as a happy, cheerful young woman crowned with ivy. The Tragedy mask is known as Melpomene, who is the Muse of Tragedy. Melpomene is depicted with the tragedy mask in one hand, and a knife or a club in the other. The masks and costumes were highly stylized and exaggerated making the characters easy to identify even from a great distance. The actors with comedic roles wore thin soled shoes, while tragic actors were elevated on stage wearing thick, raised platform shoes, called ‘cothurni’. All the actors were male, and they all played multiple roles, so a mask was used to show the change in character or mood. Masks challenged the actors to portray their characters’ feelings in more subtle ways, with voice and body language, since they couldn’t use facial expressions. The two masks are now used as the symbol for theater, in memory of its origins in ancient Greece."

- James Schwabe Sterling Silver and Gemstone Lion Sculpture Mounted on MalachiteLocated in Atlanta, GAA sterling silver sculpted lion by late American artist James Schwabe (1918 - 2008) mounted onto malachite. The eyes of the lion are gemstone (possibly cabochon emerald) and there appear to be highlights in a golden metal. The sculpture is signed on the malachite, J. Schwabe and there looks to be a number under the signature. It has been postulated that Mr. Schwabe sold his jewelry in New York under the brand, Patrice and Realm. Mr. Schwabe did design jewelry and other pieces in precious metals and gemstones for Cartier. This sculpture depicts a fierce and cute lion, seated on its haunches with its green eyes wide open. The lion sits patiently on a block of malachite, enjoying a polished surface contrasted with the natural form. So if you still have a curio cabinet, then make some room on the top shelf for this work. And if you have a vanity, then I'm sure this work will look beautiful next to your collection of boxes...Category
