Art Deco into Art Nouveau figural Jugendstil 3/4 portrait bust sculpture "Buste de femme souriante (Bust of Smiling Woman)" or "Acting Coy" after Georges Van der Straeten (1856-1928) of girl with upswept hair holding her hand before her blushing face, poetic in nature, signed as photographed, 19th century Measures: 7" H x 4" W x 3.5" D Art Deco, Art Nouveau, Jugendstil, Beelden Biography: Georges Van der Straeten, in 1856 was born in Ghent and died in the same city in 1941 1, is a sculptor Belgian. Georges Van der Straeten was first a jurist until 1882 and then pupil of the sculptor Jef Lambeaux 2, 3. He moved to Paris in 1883. It is known that he lived at n o 9 Avenue Hoche in 1910. He exhibited at the Salon of Paris from 1885 until 1912. He worked and became friends with is Jan van Beers 4. He will receive various awards including a silver medal at the 1900 World Fair in Paris. He became knight of the Legion of Honor in 1903. Georges Van der Straeten demonstrates a great technical mastery in his achievements and a high quality finish. He produced numerous portraits, graceful and seductive fantasy figures of young Parisian women where, according to Pierre Kjellberg, it "finds the lovable style sculptors of the 18th century" 5. According to several authors, he takes his inspiration from Antoine Watteau. His work and style are similar to those of the Italian sculptor Emmanuel Villanis (1858-1914). This artist is representative of La Belle Époque, a period when Art Nouveau, an international artistic movement that breaks with academic production, appears. In this sense, it constitutes a new way of expressing itself perfectly in phase with this period of political, social, technological and intellectual innovation. The works of Van der Straeten are published in large numbers, in various sizes and under various titles, by several founders, including the Paris Bronzes Society, the foundry Pinedo 6 and ceramist Friedrich Goldscheider (de) 1.
