This strikingly naturalistic bronze sculpture was created in Florence in 1895. The bust depicts an elderly man, most likely a farm worker, carrying a heavy sack of grain over his shoulder. He wears an old slightly ragged shirt which is open at his chest, revealing his thin body underneath. The man looks out into the distance on the left, his eyebrows slightly furrowed. His mouth is open as though he is breathing heavily with the strain of the work or calling out to someone unknown to the viewer. The sculptor has accurately rendered every detail, with great truth to reality. The faint stubble on the man's chin and the wrinkles on his face and hands are faithfully portrayed. In its naturalistic style and its everyday, unidealised subject-matter, this bronze may be described as a work of Realism. An Ormolu bust of a 16th century Prince, by Rancoulet French, Late 19th Century Height 72cm, width 42cm, depth 22cm Made by the skilled and renowned French artist and sculptor Ernest Rancoulet, (French, 1870-1915), this excellent gilt-bronze bust was made in the late nineteenth century, in fine neoclassical style. Rancoulet was best known for mythological scenes and figures, and depictions of athletes. He was also known for depictions of members of high society, often aristocratic women, exhibiting for a number of years at the Paris Salon, producing many exceptional likenesses, busts, and figurines, such as this. In this work, the sitter, envisioned as a 16th century Prince or nobleman of sorts, towards out and towards the left. He wears a plumed hat and a high collared cape, with a typical period frilled ruff. His tunic is elaborately decorated with jewellery. Leslie Swan (born Lucile Swan, May 10, 1890, Sioux City, Iowa) was an American sculptor and painter, known for her sensitive and evocative portrayals of human figures, informed by her extensive travels and intellectual exchanges. After receiving early education at an Episcopal boarding school, she moved to Chicago in 1903 and began her studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1908. In 1912, she married fellow artist Jerome Blum. Over the next decade, Swan’s artistic career took her to Corsica, Japan, China, Tahiti, and France, where she immersed herself in the diverse cultures and artistic traditions she encountered. In 1924, following her divorce, Swan relocated to New York City, where she continued her work as both a painter and sculptor. Five years later, she accepted a significant commission from the Cenozoic Laboratory in Beijing, beginning a transformative period in her career. It was in China that she met the philosopher Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, and their friendship would profoundly influence her work and life. Swan's portrait bust of Teilhard, now housed at the Museum of Natural History in Paris, remains one of her most celebrated pieces. She also created a reconstruction of the Sinanthropus skull, a project supervised by German anatomist Franz Weidenreich.
