About the Item
A mid 19th century plaster portrait bust of 3rd century BC Roman general and politician, Marcus Claudius Marcellus (270-208 BC), ex. Holkham Hall, Norfolk. Inscribed to the front of the sash with ‘J.S April 28, 1842’, this antique bust is reputed to have been crafted from an 18th century Italian School mould by English architect, Matthew Brettingham (1699-1769).
Brettingham oversaw the construction of Holkham Hall in 1734 and became one of the most notable architects of his time. His son of the same name travelled to Italy from 1747-1754 to purchase artworks and sculptures for British patrons which included the owner of Holkham Hall, Thomas Coke, 1st Earl of Leicester (1697-1759).
Steeped in history, this bust of Marcus Claudis Marcellus is after an antique original. It depicts Marcellus as he is often portrayed in statuary with short hair, an imposing stare and broad shoulders suggestive of a strong physique as a Roman General of the Second Punic War (218-201 BC). His name is printed to the socle front as well as inscribed to the side of the bust base.
With it’s unique provenance and impressionable ambience, this 19th century Roman plaster portrait bust is a superb classical display piece for decorative interior display in any home.

View AllTenerani Statuary Marble Bust of a Young Augustus Caesar
Located in Wormelow, Herefordshire
A finely carved statuary white marble bust of a young Augustus Caesar attributed to the workshops of 19th century Italian sculptor Pietro Tenerani (1789-1869). Also known as Young Octavian, this bust of a young Roman Emperor Augustus Caesar is after a sculpture found in the Pio Clementino Museums of the Vatican.
Carved with exceptional detail, the bust is elevated on a turned socle and bears the name ‘TENERANI’ to the front. Other busts like this one after the Vatican original of the former Emperor Augustus were sculpted in the Mid-18th Century.
Pietro Tenerani (1789-1869) was a notable Italian sculptor of the early 19th century. In his early career, he trained under Italian sculptor Lorenzo Bartolini, before moving to Rome where he won a scholarship as a pupil of Danish sculptor, Bertel Thorvalsden. Having honed his skills, Tenerani worked from a studio of his own in later years. William Cavendish, 6th Duke of Devonshire, Queen Victoria and Pope Pius IX...
