Medardo Rosso Gavroche Bust of Laughing Boy in Bronze Impressionist Work

About the Item

Medardo Rosso The Mischief or Gavroche Impressionist sculpture depicting a laughing boy, the figure half-length of the laughing boy in the cap and the face turned to the left, is screwed with a plate, cast with the sculpture, on a circular turned and ebonized wooden base. In good condition, with dark patina, this Italian figurative sculpture is signed M.Red in block letters on left shoulder. Lost-wax casting dates back to the early decades of the 1900s. Medardo Rosso-Turin, June 21, 1858-Milan, March 31, 1928-was an Italian sculptor, a leading exponent of Impressionism in sculpture. Medardo Rosso presented the first version of this work in 1882 in Milan at the Esposizione di Belle Arti di Brera under the title Dopo una scappata, and the following year at the Esposizione Internazionale di Roma. The title Gavroche, which first appeared in 1886 at the Deuxième Salon Annuel de la Société des Artistes Français, was given by the artist after he moved to Paris in 1889, in relation to the Parisian brat who died fighting on the barricades in 1832, according to the description given by Victor Hugo in Les Miserables. In 1910 a specimen of this subject was presented at the first Impressionists' exhibition in Florence as The Brat and later named The Laughing Brat. For a general bibliography of the Birichino or Gavroche, the dating of the first specimen to 1882, the numerous titles, the historical-critical affair, and the transfer of the sculpture to photography see P.Mola, I. The Work and the Series, in P.Mola, F.Vittucci, Medardo Rosso. Such statuettes were commissioned to be set up in private chapels. The Laughing Boy is considered to be the last work of Desiderio da Settignano...
