Nguyen Thanh Le bronze Sculpture Bust Black, young Vietnamese

About the Item

Gorgeous and evocative bust of a young Vietnamese (or Laotian, depending on the source) woman with her hair up. Made in Vietnam around 1950 by renowned artist Nguyen Thanh Le. Made of bronze with ebonized finish and wooden base. A naturalistic representation is appreciated, but it tends towards schematism or abstraction, since it reduces some features to fine lines, as can be seen in the eyes or in the delicate hair carved on bronze. However, it also has elements that give it a very rich and decorative taste, such as the prominent earrings or the up-do pin. We see the artist's seal on the back of her neck. More about the artist. Nguyen Thanh Le (1919-2006) was a highly regarded modern and contemporary Vietnamese artist, known for his series of busts depicting women from Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. Nguyen Thanh Le generally conceived most of his sculptural works from his workshop located in Thu Dau Mot, near Saigon. These works would be sold directly from the artist's workshop. However, should the sculpture be sold by the foundry studio, the studio's stamp would be affixed to the base of the piece. After the Geneva Agreements (1954) that divided the country, it became very difficult to obtain bronze material for the sculptures. Eventually, Nguyen Thanh Le got into the habit of using metal found on battlefields. Nguyen Thanh Le's work has been presented at auction on numerous occasions, in houses as important as Christie's, reaching very outstanding prices. A very refined piece suitable in any corner. Total dimensions: 35 x 11 x 20 cm Base dimensions (cubic): 11 x 11 x 11 cm. Dimensions: bust: 23 x 14 x 20 cm.

Extraordinary details of the dog's expression and coats showcase the high quality of this bronze. The bronze and marble present in very fine condition with superb patination. Very Heavy. No damage. Masson was a pupil of the famous French animal bronzier, Antoine-Louis Barye. He exhibited in the Paris Salon (Salon des Beaux Arts) in 1867 – 1881. More than 50 pieces of sculpture were exhibited by Masson thru 1909. Examples of his sculptures can be found in the Municipal Museum in Nimes. In early 1907, King Chulalongkorn of Thailand, known as Rama V, decided to erect a monument to his glory on a vast empty esplanade on which the parliament would soon stand (not to be completed until 1915). Rama V sailed for Europe in 1907. Chulalongkorn had the idea early on to erect an equestrian statue. His visit to the Palace of Versailles in the spring of 1907 finally convinced him. Like that of Louis XIV, whose statue is in the main courtyard of the castle, Rama V would also leave his mark in Bangkok with his equestrian statue. Therefore, it is in France that Rama V has the statue of him made. In mid-June 1907, the Thai king...
