About the Item

PAIR OF BUSTS "LUCIUS VERO" SMALL PLASTER BUST - TANAGRE 21th Century Lucius Ceionius Commodus Verus (December 15, 130 - 169), better known simply as Lucius Verus, was co-Emperor with Marcus Aurelius, from 161 to his death. Small historical bust "TANAGRE" in plaster. Handmade in Italy HEIGHT 21 cm WIDTH 10 cm DEPTH 9 cm MANUFACTURE Made in Italy MATERIAL Plaster cast Verus was the son of Lucius Aelius Caesar, a man very close to the emperor Hadrian and his first choice as successor, through his wife Avidia. When Aelius Caesar died in 138, Hadrian chose Antoninus Pius as his successor, on the condition that he in turn adopt Lucius Verus (who was then seven years old) and Marcus Aurelius, his seventeen-year-old nephew. As an imperial prince, Verus received a thorough education from the famous orator Marcus Cornelius Fronto. Verus was said to be an excellent student, and was fond of writing poetry and oratory. Verus began his public career as a quaestor in 153 and was consul in 154, well before the official age requirement (32) and without being a praetor in between. In 161 he was consul again, with Marcus Aurelius as his senior colleague. That same year Antoninus died and was succeeded by Marcus Aurelius. Verus was simultaneously chosen as co-emperor, an unprecedented event in the Roman Empire. Officially both had equal power, but in practice Marcus Aurelius became the leader. Verus was given control of the army, a sign of the trust between the two. To strengthen this alliance, Marcus gave his daughter Lucilla in marriage to Verus, who had three sons by her.
