About the Item
Large and finely cast Grand Tour patinated bronze bust of the Roman emperor, Augustus, mounted on stepped reddish brown granite base with total height of 20 inches, apparently unsigned.
Inspired by the Meroë Head of Augustus (created in 27-25 BCE and later looted by the Nubians of the Kingdom of Kush, unearthed in Meroe in 1910) and the Augustus of Prima Porta (discovered in 1863 during archaeological excavations at the Villa of Livia owned by Augustus's third and final wife, Livia Drusilla.
