1960s Terracotta Sculpture by Barbara Tribe from St Ives Cornwall UK

About the Item

Terracotta sculpture call "TOTEM" signed and dated by Barbara Tribe, 1966. Barbara Tribe (1913-2000) was a Australian-born sculptor who spent much of her life living and working in St Ives (Cornwall UK). She was the first sculptor and the first woman artist to be awarded the coveted New South Wales Traveling Art Scholarship, as 22 year old Sydney Student, in 1935. This Scholarship represented one of the very few opportunities offered to Australian artists of the period to enable further studies overseas. Tribe was one of the earliest and most proficient of students to study under Rayner Hoff, an English immigrant who became Australia's most successful interwar sculptor. She became both prolific and extremely proficient as a modeller in the years she spent under Hoff at East Sydney Technical College and working as his assistant on a variety of important civic sculpture commissions. It was no surprise, given both Rayner Hoff's training and his desire to establish on Australian soil a national academy of sculptors, that Tribe chose to continue her studies in London, initially at the Royal Academy Schools, She remained in Britain and embarked upon what became a long, active and electric career, as both sculptor and teacher. Although Barbara Tribe became an expatriate, she remained strongly connected to Australia and its sculptural practitioners, and her work has attracted significant private and public collectors in this country, alongside those in Britain. From an article by Deborah Edwards Senior Curator, Australian Art Art Gallery of New South Wales.

An amazing spider's web of a rollercoaster of design and line. This sculpture is just as delicate and light filled like a spider's web. Good overall condition with all welds intact. Some minor rust and pitting, but that just adds to the piece's outsider art charm. Clipped corners on the piece's base.
