William Shakespeare Sandstone Bust

About the Item

A truly wonderful carved sandstone bust of William Shakespeare, late 18th/early 19th century. This large sculpture of Shakespeare possesses a sensational weathered patina and is a fine display of stonemasonry. Intriguingly, related versions by John Cheere can be found at the Soane Museum and within the Royal collection. In the wake of the monarchy's restoration in 1660, the resurgence of theatre gained momentum, particularly in the eighteenth century. Influential figures such as poet Alexander Pope and renowned actor-turned-theatre manager David Garrick dedicated efforts to reinstating William Shakespeare as England's preeminent literary icon.
