About the Item

From the esteemed former collection of Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, this exquisite early 16th-century polychromed carved wood figure of St. Florian stands as a rare example of late Gothic devotional sculpture. A Roman soldier turned Christian martyr, St. Florian is venerated as the patron saint of firefighters and protector against fire and flood- a symbolism reflected in this powerful depiction. Carved with commanding presence and standing approximately 50 inches (128.2 cm) tall, the figure presents St. Florian in richly detailed armor and tunic, holding a flag in one hand while pouring water over a stylized burning structure with the other. His pose is simultaneously noble and calm, capturing both the martial dignity and merciful character of the saint. The figure is finished in parcel-gilt and polychrome, retaining remarkable areas of its original gilding and painted surface. Close examination reveals delicately incised armor detailing, subtle curls of hair beneath his helmet, and a deeply carved banner that flows naturally from his shoulder. The architectural base element- a burning tower or house- is integrated with sculptural finesse, visually anchoring the saint’s act of divine intervention. Rooted in the iconography of Austrian and Bavarian regions, St. Florian was a frequent subject in ecclesiastical commissions of the early 1500s. This figure likely once formed part of a larger altar or devotional ensemble, radiating both spiritual reassurance and artistic mastery. Its noble provenance and exceptional craftsmanship make this a museum-worthy work of sacred art from a distinguished European lineage.
