1881 Edward VII Prince of Wales Bronze Monk Inkwell & Humidor Admiral Henry Glyn

About the Item

English, circa 1881. Highly important gift from the Prince of Wales (Edward VII) to Admiral Honourable Henry Carr Glynn This charming bronze sculpture depicts a jovial monk in traditional robes, his rounded form and expressive features embodying warmth and humor. Crafted with a rich patina, the piece showcases fine detailing in the folds of the monk’s robe, the braided rope belt, and the cheerful expression on his face. The polished highlights on the bronze add depth and texture, enhancing the lifelike quality of the figure. Furthermore this piece has a highly unique functionality to it. The Monk's Cap is hinged to reveal a gilded inkwell interior, which appears unused. Further down the object above the shoulders is another hinged area which reveals a tight humidor compartment for cigars with the inscription "Admiral Hon'ble H. Glyn. From H.R.H. The Prince of Wales Xmas 1881." Additionally there is another twist compartment around the ankles of the Monk for storing tobacco. Henry Carr Glynn was part of the Royal Navy: Glyn was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 7 February, 1852. Glyn was promoted to the rank of Commander on 15 January, 1855. Glyn was promoted to the rank of Captain on 20 August, 1861. Glyn was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 16 September, 1877. Glyn was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 9 June, 1882. In an effort to strengthen diplomatic relations between the Indian rulers and the British Crown, Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, the eldest son of Queen Victoria, embarked on a tour of the Indian subcontinent in October 1875. The Prince visited 21 towns and cities across parts of modern-day India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Nepal, where he exchanged and received gifts from each ruler he met during his tour. The Prince returned to England in May 1876. Glyn was accompanied on these tours.
