18th Century Bisque Porcelain Statue "Le Baiser" after Jean Antoine Houdon

About the Item

We present you this elegant and incredibly charming titled 'le baiser', translating to 'the kiss' in French. This statuette is rendered in bisque porcelain and depicts a bust of a tenderly embracing couple. Delicately intertwined within a wreath of flowers, the man adorns a laurel wreath evocative of Julius Caesar's attribute, while the young woman wears a pearl head chain containing rich floral accents. Her bodice reveals a bare breast, which is comparable with the romantic and highly ornate nature of the sculpture crafted by Jean-Antoine Houdon (1741-1828). Resting on a turquoise-blue marble and gilded bronze base, this piece is a French creation in great condition. Jean-Antoine Houdon was a French sculptor, born in 1741 in Versailles and died in 1828 in Paris. He was one of the most important sculptors of the 18th century. Renowned for the realistic rendering of his works and skilled not only in marble, Houdon also had a talent and aptitude for working in clay, plaster and bronze. He is often referred to as "the sculptor of the Enlightenment". His subjects included Denis Diderot (1771), Benjamin Franklin (1778-1809), Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1778), Voltaire (1781), Molière (1781), George Washington (1785–1788), Thomas Jefferson (1789), Louis XVI (1790), Robert Fulton (1803–04), and Napoléon Bonaparte (1806) among others.
