18th-Century Marble Clock with a Woman from Classical Antiquity

About the Item

We present you this stunning Carrara marble clock, a masterpiece capturing a statue of a graceful young woman from classical antiquity in exquisite detail. Her foot delicately rests upon the pedestal of the clock, and she is draped in classical attire. At the base of the clock, you'll find an open gilded bronze cage from which a petite bird has taken flight, perching in a small gorse thicket to the right. The clock's mechanism is of the wire movement type and bears the signature of the esteemed French clockmaker, 'Piolaine à Paris' which is a testament to its craftsmanship and quality. The clock has been restored by our expert watchmaker and is in perfect working order. 'Piolaine à Paris' corresponds to Michel-François Piolaine, who ranks among the most significant Parisian clockmakers of the last quarter of the 18th century and the first decade of the 19th century. After achieving master status on August 11, 1787, he established his workshop on Rue des Écrivains in Paris, and later, from 1798 to 1810, he is mentioned as being on Rue des Gravilliers. He passed away around the year of 1815, and it appears that his widow continued the workshop's operations between 1817 and 1820. One clock by this clockmaker was once housed in the Schlossmuseum in Berlin, while two others are part of the collections at the François Duesberg Museum in Mons and the British Royal Collections at Windsor Castle. .
