About the Item

A sculptural work created from an 18th century Italian hand-carved arm of Christ, 18th century foot, crystal nail, aquamarine, and a red crystal cluster. The arm and foot were originally part of crucifix but were taken away due to age and distress and still cary the original paint. The piece is conserved and transformed with the gems and minerals to create a sculptural work of historical and ecclesiastical significance. This piece is being exhibited with Museo Casa di Dante in Florence, Italy for an exhibition titled, Il Coraggio e la Paura. The exhibition is hosted by the Society of Fine Arts - Artists' Circle “Dante's House.” In English the title translates to “Courage and Fear.” The collection is presented at Museo Casa di Dante, a museum that honors the history and life of Dante Alighieri. It was formerly the famous Italian poet’s home and is now committed to sharing Dante’s literary work and important works of art.  The piece is put together by Jean O'Reilly Barlow, the artist and creative director of Interi. The date of manufacture reflects when she created the piece and the period shows that the hand-carved arm is originally 18th century. Interi works to preserve and transform Italian fragment artifacts using artistic methods and contemporary interpretations. Barlow combined the 18th century arm and foot of Christ with the aquamarine to create an organic sculptural work of old and new. Barlow works to preserve the beauty and sacredness of the ecclesiastical artifact while showcasing it in a contemporary form.
