Italian Neoclassical 19th Century White Carrara Marble Sculpture Guglielmo Pugi

About the Item

Important 19th century sculpture carved on white Carrara marble. The female figure is dressed in a stunning Art Nouveau costume and rests on a pyramidal-shaped pedestal. Magnificent details throughout including the hair that is perfectly styled as is her very feminine silhouette. Signed PUGI (Guglielmo Pugi 1850-1915). The detail is simply the finest one could hope for in collectible marble statuary. The marble is perfectly white and glistens in natural light although the statue could use more cleaning. The indoor lighting used to capture the photographs was a challenge which makes some of the images appear yellow. Very good general condition. Dimensions: 25 1/4" H x 9 1/2" W x 10 1/4" D Guglielmo Pugi: Florentine sculptor, he is the author of the famous bust of King Umberto I erected in the town square of Fiesole, from 1870 he runs a workshop providing a significant foreign demand. His works are notably preserved in the historical museum of the city of Voltera in Italy. Guglielmo Pugi (1850-1915), born in Fiesole, Italy, was an Italian sculptor whose studio was in Florence. He and his sons, Gino and Fiorenzo, functioned as Guglielmo Pugi and Sons, and the sons later operated as Fratelli G. and F. Pugi (also known as Pugi Brothers). They primarily served the export market. They were present at the 1901 World Fair in Buffalo and some of their sculptures are still in Buffalo parks today. Example works ("Statues, busts, and groups in marble") by G. and F. Pugi Brothers were displayed in the Palace of Manufactures in the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair.

The dial supporting a reclining bronze classical muse on a rectangular white Carrara marble base decorated by a row of gilt bronze beads, the set rests on four feet. The cross in the hand of the bronze muse can be removed (see photos). This 19th Century figurative clock is very decorative, interesting for its technicality of the dial and provenance. The bronze feminine muse and its shape has a perfect patina and is a remarkable conversational piece. The garniture set are a pair of fine neoclassical bronze vases with brown and golden patina that rest on white Carrara marble embellished with gilt bronze figural handles...
