A fabulous example of this important sculpture in optimal condition. Throughout his life Barye endeavoured to capture the fundamental nature of the animal kingdom in all its diversity, wild or tame, exotic or familiar, cruel or gentle, bringing to life the roaring, trembling, living beasts. The son of a goldsmith, apprenticed to a steel engraver at a young age, Barye found himself making moulds for ornaments, acquiring knowledge that he would later build on to produce his exquisitely chased bronzes. When he was called up at seventeen, he joined the army’s topographic brigade where he used clay to model raised relief maps...

‘The Monkey Rider’, Paul Joseph Raymond Gayrard
Located in Brighton, West Sussex
‘The Monkey Rider’ – Paul Joseph Raymond Gayrard (1807 - 1855). Signed to the base ‘Paul Gayrard’ and dated 1846. A rare patinated bronze group of a monkey in the guise of a Jockey riding a racehorse, startled by a barking dog at his feet. French, Dated 1846. The mid-nineteenth century saw a surge of interest in animalier bronzes with whimsical and anthropomorphic subjects becoming particularly fashionable. In a similar vain to Christophe Fratin’s humanised depiction's of Bears posed as lamp lighters, dentists and reading books, Gayrard created his famous Monkey bronzes. He was awarded a First Class Medal at the 1846 Salon for his humorous group ‘The Monkey Steeplechase’, which can be related to subject of the present sculpture, ‘Monkey Rider’. With the publication of Darwin’s ‘Origin of Species in 1859’ the popularity of anthropomorphically conceived subjects began to decline. As such these sculptures were only created during a very brief window of time and are consequently very rare. PAul Joseph Ryamond Gayrard Paul Joseph Raymond Gayrard (1807 – 1855) born in Clermont-Ferrand, France. He studied at an early age under his father the sculptor and engraver Raymond Gayrard, before becoming a student of François Rude and later David d'Angers. He first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1827 and continued to submit works throughout his lifetime winning a Second Class Medal in 1834 and a First Class Medal in 1846 and 1848. His last recorded exhibit was in 1855. He executed many busts of notables of the day which proved popular with the haute bourgeois, but it was his talent for animalier that confirmed his reputation as a sculptor of considerable talent. His known bronze animal models date from the years 1846 until 1848 with his powerful plaster of a 'Harness Horse...

Holy Water of "San Clemente in Rome" End 19th Century
Located in Madrid, ES
The holy water of "San Clemente in Rome" end 19th century Hand made faithful reproduction with or without the coat of arms of the base made in 3 pieces. Italy Measures: height 150cm diameter 80cm width: 80 cm The Basilica of Saint Clement Lateran is a complex of buildings in Rome, Italy centered around a Catholic church dedicated to Pope Clement I. The site is notable for being an archaeological record of early Rome's religious, political, and architectural history. from the Christian era to the Middle Ages. The old church was transformed over the centuries from a private home that was the site of clandestine Christian worship in the first century to a grand public basilica in the sixth century, reflecting the growing legitimacy and power of the emerging Catholic church. The house was originally owned by a Christian consul and martyr, Tito Flavio Clemente, who was one of the first Roman senators to convert to Christianity. He allowed his house to be used as a secret meeting place for his fellow Christians, which religion was then prohibited. There is evidence of a pagan cult at the site. In the 2nd century members of a Mithraist cult built a small temple dedicated to Mithras in an insula, or apartment complex, on the site. This temple, used for initiation rituals, lasted until around the end of the 3rd century. Excavations in the 1860s revealed the first forgotten basilica underlying the medieval one. In the late 4th or early 5th century, after Christianity had become the official religion of Rome, the small church was enlarged, acquiring the neighboring insula and other nearby buildings; the architects began to work on the complex of rooms and patios, building a central nave on the site of the previous church, and an apse on the previous mithraeum. The new church was dedicated to Pope Clement I, a first-century Christian convert and a contemporary of Titus Flavius Clement. Restorations were undertaken in the 9th century and around 1080-99.1 Apart from those in the Church of Santa Maria Antiqua, the most extensive collection of wall paintings from the early Middle Ages are those found in the lower basilica of San Clemente. Over the following centuries, San Clemente became a "beacon" for church artists and sculptors, benefiting from the generosity of the Byzantine Empire. Currently, it is one of the most richly decorated churches in Rome. The last great event that occurred in the lower basilica was the election in 1099 of Cardinal Rainerius of San Clemente as Pope Paschal II. The current basilica was rebuilt in a campaign by Cardinal Anastasius, c. 1099-h. 1120, after the original church was burned to the ground during the Norman sack...

Antique, New and Vintage Figurative Sculptures

Figurative sculpture is a modern art form in which artists create work that is typically representative of the visible world. However, sculptures that are considered to be figurative in style can definitely be inclusive of abstract elements. A wide range of antique, new and vintage figurative sculptures has been made over the years by both well-known and emerging artists, and these pieces can prove striking and provocative as part of your home decor.

Realistic representation in visual art has a very long history. And while figurative artists, whether figurative painters or sculptors, find inspiration in humans, animals and real-life objects, good figurative sculptures can make us think differently about how the real world should look. Just as figurative paintings might include Photorealistic human likenesses, they can also include elements of Surrealism and can suggest a creative and alternative reality. Figurative sculptures aren’t always realistic impressions of our world — depictions of the human form in classical Greek sculpture, for example, might emphasize beauty and physical perfection.

There are a variety of figurative sculptures on 1stDibs created by artists working in a number of styles, including Art Deco, Art Nouveau, mid-century modern and more. A large figurative sculpture can introduce an excellent focal point in a guest bedroom, while smaller works might draw the eye to spaces such as wall shelving or a bookcase that people may otherwise overlook.

When decorating your living room, dining room, home office and study areas with figurative sculptures, don’t be afraid to choose bold colors to inject brightness into neutral spaces. Texture is another factor to consider when purchasing figurative sculptures. A highly textural work of ceramics or wood will catch the eye in a sleek modern space, whereas a smooth, flat glass sculpture can offer an often much-needed contrast in a room that already has many textures.

On 1stDibs, find antique, new or vintage figurative sculpture or other kinds of sculpture for your home decor today.
