About the Item

Sculptor Georg Wrba was born in a farmers family and was the brother of Max Wrba (1882-1924), architect in Dresden. Wrba was one of the most successful German sculptors who received commissions from important, prominent people and project partners which allowed him to realise an impressive and very varied oeuvre. His work – multiform and monumental – manly contains sculptures for fountains and buildings, but he also made small-scale and refined bronzes. He at first learned from Jakobus Bradl senior and junior to carve wood. From 1891 until 1896 he studied at the 'Akademie der Bildenden Künste München' and studied under Syrius Eberle (1844-1903). He obtained in 1879 a travel award by Prince Regent Luitpold and went to Italy with Egon Rheinberger (1870-1936). In 1897 he settled in Munich and became director of the city's school of sculpture. In 1906 and 1907 he was involved in creating sculptures in Berlin for the buildings designed by the famous architect Ludwig Hoffmann (1852-1932) and by architect Alfred Messels (1853-1909). Later on he moved to Dresden where he became from 1907 until 1930 professor at the 'Akademie der Bildenden Künste Dresden'. He brought this Dresden school of sculpture into contact with the reforming ideas of the 'Deutscher Werkbund' ('German Association of Craftsmen'), a German association of artists, architects, designers, and industrialists. The basic aim of the 'Deutscher Werkbund' and also of the Dresden artists' association 'Die Zunft', was to achieve a collaboration between and integration of various forms of art, rejecting ornamentation on it’s own: painting and sculpture had to be integral parts of architecture. Wrba was a founding member 'Die Zunft' ('The Guild'). In his 'Metamorphoseon Libri' (II, 836-875; 15 volumes), Publius Ovidius Naso (Sulmo 43 BC - Tomis 17 AD) tells how Jupiter fell in love with Europe, the daughter of the Phoenician king Agenor. To approach the girl quietly the god changed himself into a white bull. After some time, Europe was losing her fear of the nicely, with flowers decorated animal and even climbed on his back.
