About the Item
Rare pair of hand-carved works of devotional art with an amazing patina.
Saint Teresa of Ávila, born Teresa Sánchez de Cepeda y Ahumada, also called Saint Teresa of Jesus (1515-1582), was a Spanish noblewoman who chose a monastic life in the Roman Catholic Church. These entirely hand carved and stunning sculptures of Saint Teresa (one of the patron saints of Spain) date from the earliest years of the 1900s. These sculptures are probably not from the same maker, but we purchased them from a private collector's relatives who would like the idea of them staying together. We were once taught that a top quality sculpture looks perfect from all angles and that certainly is the case here. Her body posture is exactly what a real person looks like in this stance and the manner in which her clothes are draped around her body too reveil the talent of what can only have been a skilled and seasoned sculptor. Have you also noticed the fine details that together create her serene facial expression (especially in the tall sculpture)? They just don't make 'em like this anymore. Apart from the seperately carved bases, both these beautiful and good condition works of religious art are entirely hand carved out of one solid piece of wood. The small one is a beautiful nutwood and the taller one is more difficult to determine, but is not a hardwood. How tall the taller one is, can possibly best be seen in the photos where we have placed a wine bottle next to it. Both these handcarved antique sculptures bear no signature and we like to believe that this is the case, because the artist wanted to leave their purity and divinity intact.
