About the Item

Alice Riordan (Long Island, New York) Cold-painted and gilt bronze. 12 ½ inches wide by 8 ½ inches deep by 21 inches tall Originally a painter, Alice Riordan has been studying art most of her life. The transition from painting to sculpture occurred when Riordan was studying art in Florence where she was drawn again and again to the sculptures of Michelangelo. Later in Paris, Riordan's interests centered around the work of Rodin whose power and strength overwhelmed the young artist with its romantic implications. It was not until several years later that she became a sculptor herself, studying first with the Hungarian-born and European-trained sculptor George Gach. Her studies later took her to the New York studio of sculptor Angelo Bona where skills of technique and anatomy grew beside the artist's love of the craft. Over the months and years that followed, Riordan's understanding and appreciation for the medium flourished at the National Academy in New York, in studios and in the Joel Meisner foundry where her sculptures came to life in the age-old process of bronze casting.
