About the Item
This extraordinary museum piece Enthroned Virgin Mary with the child on her lap comes from the Rhone region in France. The saint symbol and protector of France, this statue of Madonna was found with a Tabernacle ( the interio fabric/ velvet has been replaced over the years) and has been there for hundreds of years. It is very well preserved and in magnificent condition. The posture of Virgin with a Jesus sitting on her lap represents very important intricate medieval theological concept- Throne of Wisdom, where Mary serves as a throne for Jesus Christ who in turn embraces divine wisdom. Dynamic, precise and expressive lines show an extremely refine wood carving work. Usually, this kind of sculptures were placed on an alter but also were used in religious processions as well as being involved in theatrical performance within a church.
