Antique Hand-Carved Gothic Style Quasimodo / Hunchback of Notre Dame Sculpture

About the Item

Very rare, 19th century statuette of Victor Hugo's famous novel character. If you are a collector of rare novel and/or famous movie characters then this 19th century sculpture of Quasimodo, better known as the Hunchback of Notre Dame, could be the perfect addition to your collection. This main character from Victor Hugo's most famous novel (published in 1831) is (apart from the lower part of the base) entirely carved out of one piece of wood and it was gilt afterword. The sculptor has done a marvelous job in creating this deformed, but very strong looking Quasimodo. Apart from his hunched back, there are also his almost toothless mouth, the large mold just above his nose and his crooked legs that makes this Quasimodo look like he is about to break under the weight of his physical & psychological discomfort. The 'romantic movement' novel perfectly tells the story of an unanswered love. One that the less fortunate sometimes are more likely to have to endure. Apart from the deformities, the sculptor has also managed to capture some wonderful and original, 15th century Gothic elements such as his period clothing and shoes. We are certain that the Gothic symbol on his chest has a deeper meaning also, but we have yet to find out what that is. This wonderful, meaningful and rare wooden sculpture is covered with a thin layer of plaster so that the gilding would last longer. Over the decades a lot of the gilding has worn off, but that has given this work of art its rich and stunning patina. Our price for this rare sculpture includes perfect packing and worldwide store to door delivery in just 4 days. Maximum height x width x depth: 14.8 x 6.1 x 5.9 inches. We have a passion for the unique, for quality, for stylish yet practical and for craftsmanship of years gone by. Early 1900s Antique Hand Carved Barometer with a Winged Gothic Dragon Sculpture
Located in Lisse, NL
This rare and decorative barometer with thermometer is in excellent condition! Have you ever seen a barometer with a carved dragon? This rare piece was probably custom-made for a person who had a passion for dragons. It could also be that the master carver used his imagination, because this winged dragon seems to be looking at the thermometer. It may be hoping for the temperature to rise, because this fire spitting creature does not like the cold. We have never seen a barometer like this and to find it in this condition, again felt like a blessing. This antique comes with a maker's or dealer's name from Amsterdam. The thermometer can be read in Celsius and in Fahrenheit and the beautiful and clean barometer also is in good working condition. This rare and good size 'private weather station' too is a privilege to own and look at. Mind you, our fair price for this one of a kind antique weather station...

Antique Hand Carved Gothic Church Panel of Feeding Pelican as Symbol of Christ
Located in Lisse, NL
Stunning religious wall panel in thick relief with strong hook for easy mounting. For the collectors of stunning antique church relics we are also offering this marvelously hand carved pelican sculpture for wall mounting. The character ascribed to the pelican in this context is nearly as fabulous as that of the phœnix. From a clumsy, gluttonous, piscivorous water-bird, it was by the growth of legends transformed into a mystic emblem of Christ, whom Dante terms "Nostro Pelicano". St. Hieronymus gives the story of the pelican restoring its young ones destroyed by serpents as an illustration of the destruction of man by the old Serpent, and his salvation by the blood of Christ. The pelican in Christian art is an emblem of Jesus Christ, by "whose blood we are healed" and it is also a symbol of charity. Many early painters and carvers mistakenly represented it more similar to an eagle (much like in this antique church relic), and not as a natural pelican which is why most people today still are a bit confused at first when this stunning hand carved, symbolic bird is called a pelican. This striking and all hand carved, symbolic panel was originally part of a church or monastery communion rail...
