About the Item

A beautiful sculpture of a seated woman holding a child in black polished clay, with polychrome sgraffito signed by Manuel Felguérez. The woman portrays a "ponytail" and an attire proper for indigenous women in Mexico. Felguérez was born in Valparaíso, Zacatecas, on Dec. 12th. 1929 and died in México City on June 8th. 2020 One of the most important artists in Mexico, a pioneer of Abstract Art in this country, and a member of the artistic movement known as: "Generación de la Ruptura" ( "Rupture Generation" formed by young artists trying to create a different type of art than his leading older predecessors). He studied in Mexico City and Paris, France. His very personal style was developed with the influence of Cubism, Constructive Geometry, and Abstract Expressionism, styles he was exposed to while being in Europe. This piece along with others in the same style and material was a project that offered affordable decorative craft-style objects by this talented artist. Some sources credit Max Kerlow as a partner and main promoter in this endeavor.
