About the Item

I recognized it was Charles Atlas before looking at the inscription on the front of the base bearing his name. Charles Atlas was such an iconic figure of my youth. We all wanted to look like him. He was handsome, and his body was godlike. He was everywhere, magazines, television and any place out in the public view. He was the original body builder, and was coaxing young men to follow his advice and no longer be a 97 pound weakling. Just read his book, follow his training advice, and you too could look like that. He was showing off his body well into the 1950s. If you are not a baby boomer (born after 1960), I suggest you look him up on your computer. Bearing the artist signature Nicolosi as well as the noted foundry Roman Bronze Works, who by the way cast the works of the western artist Remington and many other major artists. This is not some recent casting. This was cast circa 1930s. Now for something about the artist Joseph Nicolosi Italian /American 1893-1961. He studied with and was the protege of Solon Borglum; and Edward McCarten. His works are exhibited at Brookgreen Gardens, Stanford University and many other public places A sculpture of Ava Gardner, commissioned for the motion picture One Touch of Venus, 1948 is documented widely. The present sculpture of Charles Atlas is mentioned in the book by John Massey, an art historian - American Adonis: Tony Sansone, The First Male Physique Icon (New York: Universe, 2004). T Working on numerous commissions on both the east and west coasts, Nicolosi split his time between Los Angeles and New York City. While living at the Williams’ designed estate, Nicolosi worked on a series of bronze bas relief portraits for the peristyle Memorial Court of Honor at the Los Angeles Coliseum. He died suddenly at his home on Saint Pierre in July 1961 after completing his tenth piece for the Coliseum project. We are bring you here something very special. A superb Modernist model of a Gazelle by Walter Rotan (1912-2001) with a very dark verdigris patina. Cast at the Roman Bronze Works in the 1930s or 1940s. The bronze is stamped Roman Bronze Corp. NY to the reverse and bears an integral signature in the plinth. Rotan was an important 20th century American sculptor. A student of Albert Laessle, Rotan's work is held in public and private collections throughout the country. During his lifetime, his work was exhibited in the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Art.
