About the Item

A Bronze Figure of a 1st Century CE Roman ‘Narcissus’ (‘The Bird’ Edition) Description: The contrapposto male figure modelled from the So-Called Narcissus uncovered in Pompeii in 1862. The youthful figure stands with a downcast gaze, his right forearm lifted and middle finger raised in sensitive gesticulation, his left arm clutching at the fawn’s skin draped across his shoulder. Sandalled, he stands upon an integral circular base of scotia profile with egg-and-dart and leaf-and-dart moulding. Notes: The statue on which the figure is based, the bronze ‘Narcissus’ or Dionysus of Naples is believed to have been modelled off the ‘Hermes of Praxiteles’, a work widely copied in Roman sculpture. Discovered in a modest Pompeiian house in 1862, the presiding director of the Naples Museum Giuseppe Fiorelli identified the figure as Narcissus. Fiorelli’s initial identification has been widely criticised however, with the consensus generally supporting that the figure is in fact the Greek god of wine and pleasure, Dionysus. This opinion is supported by the myriad of Dionysiac imagery, such as the nebris (νεβρίς) or fawn’s skin cloaking the figure. Provenance: Private Australian Collection. Dimensions: Height: 60cm.
