A Bronze Figure of a Csikós by Hungarian Sculptor László Beszédes, Early 20th Century Provenance: Private Melbourne Collection. Description: The bronze figure titled ‘Csikós’, referring to the renowned mounted Hungarian herdsman of the puszta or grasslands of the Great Hungarian Plain, with representations of traditional agrarian life a staple of the Hungarian sculptor László Beszédes’ (Beszédes János László) works. Donned in the typical attire of a Csikós, the figure wears a szűr or suba, a heavy mantle or cape usually made from sheep’s wool or skins, layered above a loose collared shirt typically dyed blue to emphasise their higher status in comparison to other peasants, a pair csizma or knee length leather boots, with his csikós kalap or wide-brimmed felt hat the most identifiable article of clothing signifying his profession. Signed ‘Beszédes’ and raised atop a stepped Peche D’alap base. Dimensions: Height: 40cm Width: 17cm Depth: 20cm
