About the Item

This bronze plaque representation of Shiva with a human face was intended to serve as a lingam cover. This examples has an elaborate mustache, a cap rimmed with coiled cobras, almond eyes, earrings, a necklace, a moon and third eye on his brow. This fine example is from Western India, probably Maharashtra, Western Decca, dating to the 18th-19th century. The face allowed worshippers to both see and be seen by Shiva and would have been placed over the linga, a symbol of the energy of God, worshipped throughout India.
