Bronze sculpture “The Childhood of Silenus”, after Clodion – 19th

About the Item

Bronze group with a brown patina, entitled "The Childhood of Silenus," signed Clodion and annotated "Cresson Éditeur" on the base. Claude Michel (1738-1814), known as Clodion, was a sculptor from Lorraine, a student of Jean-Baptiste Pigalle, known for having received numerous awards for his mythological and allegorical work. "The Childhood of Silenus" depicts a young satyr in human form, his pan flute slung over his shoulder, accompanied by a bacchante and two children, all dressed in drapery and animal skins. They dance, play the tambourine, and stroll in a joyful atmosphere. This group is mounted on a griotte Italian marble base with a molded and beaded edge. The whole rests on an oval base with a mahogany groove. This work is appreciated for its realism, its jovial spirit, and its dimension. ******** Period: Second half of the 19th century. Claude Michael Clodion, [1738-1814], was the son-in-law of sculptor Augustin Pajou; he trained in Paris in the workshops of Lambert Sigisbert Adam, his maternal uncle and Jean-Baptiste Pigalle, the most successful sculptor of the time. After winning the Prix de Rome, he moved to Italy, sharing a studio with Jean-Antoine Houdon and studying antique, Renaissance, and Baroque sculpture.
