About the Item
Neoclassical bronze sculpture with brown patina, entitled "Love," also known as "Love Taking a Butterfly," signed Antoine-Denis Chaudet (1763-1810) on the terrace.
Chaudet was a French sculptor and painter known for winning the first Prix de Rome for sculpture in 1784. He was a member of the Académie de France in Rome, then of the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture, and finally Professor of Fine Arts in Paris.
This work depicts Love in the guise of a winged adolescent, with a delicate posture, innocently playing with a butterfly that has come to sip the juice of a rose.
The original of this sculpture, in marble, dating from 1817, completed posthumously, is now on display at the Louvre Museum in Paris.
Through this bucolic and refined work, Chaudet was able to express sensitivity, restraint, and grace.
