About the Item

This hand carved marble contemporary art sculpture is designed by female artist / designer Roos Schneijderberg. The art piece is about female objectification, love, and mortality. It is called: Can't Forget Her (Legs) The marble sculptured serene legs are casually placed on the floor, like a melancholic memory. As if a woman is silently lying in the room, patiently waiting for the viewer’s attention. It is an aesthetic, refined, one may say sensual work, but there is something subtly alienating about it. Only the first part of the female buttocks is visibly, just enough to give the spectator a seductive association, but in such a way, that the piece does not become vulgar. It stays sophisticated and poetic. Nevertheless, the straight cut side is like a sharp undertone. It creates almost a lurid association of cut of legs. The work is about human mortality, and the desire to escape from this. On a lighter side it expresses the remembrance of a love affair. A woman is captured for eternity, through a one-to-one representation in imperishable marble. She is not to be erased. Still, it shows her loneliness. It is quite sad and painful to realise that this - her not being forgotten - is what she was secretly longing for, but that her legs - her body - became the object to be remembered. The price an attractive woman pays, is that she becomes a trophy for others. It shows the female objectification in society. The production of the art piece took more than six months. First a clay model was made (see picture) then the sculpture was carved by hand out of Carrara marble. A continuous process of the artist working together with the stonemasons. The greatest care has been given to create exactly the right pose for the most realistic appearance. Multiple films and photos were shot, making the piece more personal, and more confronting. The artist chose consciously which details to add, and leave out, to create a sense of sacred and seductive, melancholic poetry in the work. Crucial was the shape of the sloping upper knee. The course of the muscles and bones. The little accent of the toes. The refinement in the high heels, with the risk of breaking. The fashionable (Miu Miu designed) sling-back shoes, making this woman a contemporary, not historical, figure. And above all, choosing the right point on the buttocks, where the legs were cut off from the female body, as if it was real flesh. It makes the art piece, besides having aesthetic appeal, also very intimate, and in a way, fairly unsettling. Besides this original piece, one enlarged version, seven times enlarged making it seven meters wide (see pictures), was made on commission as permanent outside sculpture. The larger version is called: DON'T CALL ME BABY - I AM GREATER THAN YOU MIGHT THINK (see pictures) Roos Schneijderberg is a Dutch multidisciplinary creative. Her work includes conceptual furniture, sculptures, mixed media objects, video installations, paintings, and scenery creations. Her style is sophisticated yet bold presented with some serious lightness. Introspection, femininity, and a refined abrasive interaction between imperfection and aestheticism are recurring themes in her oeuvre.
