Cortendorf West German Mid-Century Pottery Seated African Man

About the Item

A stylish mid-century West German figure of a seated African man by Cortendorf. The pottery figure sits on a rounded base with a flat back edge and portrays a seated man resting on his arms with his knees raised. The man wears a cloth draped over one shoulder and resting on the base and wears a hat with his head held slightly to one side. He has molded and painted features and is glazed in satin black with yellow and blue glazes applied to the cloth and hat and with a raised rib patterning to the surface of the base which is decorated with dull orange glazes over a black ground. The base is unglazed and has a printed blue Cortendorf mark and is numbered 4688 R. Provenance: Acquired from the UK Art Market. In good condition with light wear associated with age and use. There is small area of red glaze missing from the mouth and appears to be an original making fault.
