Corybante Stifling Jupiter's Cries Bronze by Louis Leon Cugnot

About the Item

Our very tall (47 in, 119.5 cm) bronze group sculpture, Corbante Stifling the Cries of Jupiter, is an exceptional casting after an original model by Louis Léon Cugnot (1835-1894), and considered one of the artist's finest achievements. Signed G. Martin. Fondeur and CORYBANTE ETOUFFANTE LES CRIS DE JUPITER ENFANT. LEON. CUGNOT PARIS MDCCCLXX (1870). With bronze-mounted marble column of the period, measuring 33.5 in (85 cm) tall and 18 in (46 cm) square. Each in good condition, with scratches and rubbing wear, and the finest casting of this important work we have seen in our 25 years in business. This important work by Cugnot depicts a popular story from Greek and Roman mythology. As the god Saturn was warned that one of his offspring would overthrow him, he ate his children at birth. To protect their son, his wife Ops took the infant Jupiter to the island of Crete to be raised by the Corybantes (or Korybantes) who used the rhythm of their dancing and the clashing of their cymbals to disguise the baby’s cries and thus prevent his discovery by Saturn. Offspring of Apollo and the Muse Thalia, the Corybantes were the armed and crested dancers who worshipped the Phrygian goddess Cybele with drumming and dancing. Gugnot studied with Georges Diébolt (1816-1861) and Francisque-Joseph Duret (1804-1865) at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts where he won the first prize for sculpture in 1859. He was still a resident of the French Academy in Rome when he presented his Corybante Stifling the Cries of Jupiter at the Salon of 1863. Subsequently, a marble of the same subject was installed in the Tuileries gardens (Musée d'Orsay, inv. n° RF 220). After returning to Paris he received a number of significant commissions. Other important works by Cugnot include: Drunken Faun, bronze, in the gardens of the Museum of Fine Arts of Lyon, 1863; marble figure of Petrarch at the Hôtel de la Païva, Paris, circa 1863; Napoleon seated on an eagle dominating the world, plaster, at the Musée d'Orsay, 1869; tomb of Generals Jacques Léon Clément-Thomas and Claude Lecomte (two of the first casualties of the Paris Commune) in the 4th division of Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris, with architect Ernest Coquart, 1871; monument to the Battle of Callao with a finial figure of Nike, historical and allegorical bronzes, and friezes of the battle, for Plaza Dos de Mayo, Lima, Peru, circa 1873; interior allegorical figures of Paving and Gas for the Palais Garnier, Paris, circa 1874; pediment figures of Justice and Strength in the Court of Cassation, Paris, circa 1879; and Young Jupiter, a cast bronze copy dated 1886, at the Seventh Regiment Armory, Upper East Side, New York City.
