About the Item
A wooden gong handle featuring two figures positioned back-to-back. The piece has a smooth patina with a dark, mahogany-like finish. Most of these figures are depicted seated with their knees raised. According to Barton (1930), among the Ifugao, the gong serves as a "means of incorporation," similar to the role of bulul class statuettes that represent deities. This might explain the occasional presence of anthropomorphic figures on gong handles.
