About the Item
A fine and early to mid 19th century plaster depiction of Flora the Goddess of Spring, possibly by Humphrey Hooper
Flora, the Roman goddess of spring, through the chaplet of flowers that she wears in her hair and the wreath of flowers held in her left hand. Flora is dressed in a diaphanous close-fitting robe, fastened at her left shoulder and left loose at the right shoulder, to expose her right breast. Her right hand is raised and clenched, gripping a small swag of drapery, with a hole in the centre, designed to hold a lamp, which is now missing and the hole has been filled. There is a tree trunk support by Flora’s right leg, whilst the figure is designed so that it leans forward. On an integral circular base
Lots of nibbles and knocks, age related wear and staining, the majority of the original painted finish is present almost has a coade stone tone. Some evidence of some old repairs and a section of the flower wreath is missing.
Similar example housed within the national trust collection.
