About the Item

Early 20th century italian bronze sculpture depicting Giambattista Perasso 'Balilla' By: unknown Material: bronze, copper, metal Technique: cast, molded, polished, metalwork Dimensions: 3 in x 5.5 in x 9 in Date: early 20th century, 1920-1940 Style: Art Déco Place of origin: Italy An italian bronze sculpture that captures the fierce determination of Giovanni Battista Perasso, also known as 'Balilla', a young genoese who, according to legend, sparked the revolt against the Austrian occupation of Genoa in 1746. The dynamic, twisting figure is portrayed mid-motion, arm raised defiantly as he prepares to hurl a stone, his expression intense and resolute. The intricate folds of his drapery accentuate the dramatic movement, while the solid rectangular base grounds the composition. The myth holds that in December 1746, as weary Austrian soldiers transported a cannon through the Portoria district, a boy nicknamed 'Balilla' spontaneously hurled the first stone, inspiring the populace to join the insurrection that ultimately drove out the foreign troops. This iconic tale of youthful patriotism and bravery was later embraced by Mussolini during the 'ventennio fascista' regime (1922-1943) as a symbol of the idealized italian spirit, glorified through the Opera Nazionale Balilla, a youth fascist organization. The sculpture masterfully encapsulates this powerful narrative in a singular, arresting image.
