Education of Achilles by the Centaur Chiron Bronze Sculpture, Francois Rude

About the Item

Large, exceptional quality bronze sculpture depicting The Education of Achilles by the Centaur Chiron, after the model by Francois Rude. Early Nineteenth Century Fine Rouge Griotte marble base. The composition for this group was inspired by Jean-Baptiste Regnault's, 1754-1829, monumental canvas entitled L'Education d'Achille par le Centaure Chiron, exhibited at the Salon of 1783. A nearly identical bronze is in the permanent collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, LACMA, European Sculpture, James E. Clark Bequest (M.87.119.21). A very similar bronze was sold at Christie's Sale 5473, June 20th, 2007, Lot 191, but lacking Achilles' bow and arrow and without a marble base. The present sculpture is in excellent condition, retaining Achilles' bow and arrow. Chiron's magnificent tail shows a small juncture indicating that it was cast separately as was the case with most large scale bronzes of the period. There is a series of inventory numbers at the back, possibly from a museum reference. The fine Rouge Griotte marble base appears to be original with very minor abrasions and small mount holes for the support of the sculpture. Beautiful original rich dark brown patina and very fine hand chiseled details. Dimensions listed include the marble base.

  • Antique Large Carved Oak Figure of Saint Anthony of Padua, 18th-19th Century
    Located in New York, NY
Fine hand carved oak figure of Saint Anthony of Padua Late 18th- Early 19th Century Saint Anthony is depicted with his head raised, mouth ajar, as if in the process of speaking. He stands upright wearing his traditional Franciscan robes and holding open a book. Beautifully carved with high level of detail, unusual for oak pieces. Oak is a dense hardwood which is difficult to carve and it's rare to see this level of detail in an early oak sculpture. Saint Anthony is the Patron Saint of lost things. While living at the monastery, he had a treasured book which contained psalms and personal observations. His book was stolen by a man who decided to leave the monastery and Anthony ferverently prayed for its return as the cost of a new book would have been beyond his means. The thief repented and returned the book which is believed to be preserved at the Franciscan Library in Bologna. He is one of the most popular Catholic saints...
