About the Item

ELFRIEDE MEINDL (1926-2020) - Fine vintage folk art ceramic figure of an Atlantic fisherman on a plinth base - small size - featuring elaborate hand made and hand crafted details throughout including the day's catch of fish in a bucket, a cable knit sweater, large rubber boots, rain jacket and sou'wester hat - signed on the base - Canada (Nova Scotia) - circa 1970's. Excellent vintage condition - minor loss to one fish held in his left hand (not visible from front view - see photo detail) - no restoration - minor signs of age and use. Size/Dimensions - Small - 3 1/2" Wide x 2 3/4" Deep x 5 3/4" High. Special Note - Ms. Meindl became quite famous in her lifetime for creating figures and groupings in clay. The Nova Scotia provincial government became aware of her work and gave them as gifts to visiting dignitaries and royalty including custom works made for the Queen Mother (1979) and Princess Diana (1983). The Atlantic fisherman figures were some of her best known and best loved works and interestingly she was disappointed when she saw actual fisherman coming into the harbor wearing running shoes and baseball caps so she found an old photo with the traditional dress of the Atlantic fishermen that she then used as inspiration for her figures.
