About the Item

A quite wonderful and whimsical work by Japanese American Hawaiin artist Esther Shimazu. Shimazu is the granddaughter of Japanese immigrants and was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii. Shimazu received her Bachelors in Fine Art and Masters of Fine Art from Massachusetts/ Amherst before returning home where she has become one of Hawaii's best-known artists. Shimazu was greatly inspired by another Japanese American Hawaiin resident artist Toshiko Takaezu (whom the previous owner also collected). This particular work is a fine example of her most distinct and recognizable ceramic figures /sculptures - her bald, nude, somewhat large, rounded, robust Asian women creations - all handcrafted and hand-designed. This sculpture features a sly and mischievous-looking cat resting comfortably and playfully on her (or his) nude owner's shoulder. The sculpture is signed and dated (2004) by the artist on the base. The piece comes with an 11" x 11' display board as acquired. A spectacular work. Would be a great addition to any Asian American Japanese art or modern art collection or very eye-catching stand-alone work in any setting. A true gem of a piece. One of our personal favorites. The sculpture is in very good to excellent vintage condition with no discernable flaws, cracks, chips, etc... and light, if any, wear consistent with age and use (please see photos). A very special and unique work overall. One of our favorites.
