Antique Meiji Signed Japanese Figural Woman & Lantern Incense Burner with Base

About the Item

This large antique Meiji period Japanese patinated and polychromed bronze is signed by an unknown artist and presumed to have been made in approximately 1880 in the period Meiji style. The bronze is extremely detailed in the casting and depicts a standing figure of bijin on a base with a tall lantern next to her. The figural bronze figure shows considerable detail from her hair and face, down to the grain in the platforms she is standing on. Her obi is also done with a green polychrome with gilt accents. The lantern is also very ornate in its casting and polychromed in a deep red. The bronze sits on a wooden plinthe base, and the bronze is signed with a four character impressed mark on the back. It is presumed this bronze was originally designed as a figural incense burner, which has since been converted to an electrified light given the hole in the back of the lantern's base.
