Figure in Bronze with Medal Patina "Muse Des Bois" After Henri-Louis Levasseur

About the Item

Sculpture in bronze with a medallion patina called "Muse des bois" (Muses from the woods) after Henri-Louis Levasseur. It represents a young woman dressed in a close-fitting drapery revealing her forms. She is wearing a crown of oak leaves and her hair is tied behind her back. In her left hand, she holds an antique lyre made from a turtle shell and goat horns. Her right arm extended in the air indicates that she is singing. The work is signed "A. Levasseur" on the Terrace for Alexandre Levasseur (artist making copies of henri Levasseur) and a cartouche titles "Muse des bois par LEVASSEUR Hors concours". The whole is placed on a gray marble. The Muses are the nine daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne and govern the liberal arts. Since Antiquity, they have inspired artists as mediators between the gods and creators. The muse presented here is probably Erato, goddess of lyrical poetry who can be recognized by her lyre. The lyre is also an instrument linked to the god Apollo, often accompanied by the muses. Henri Louis Levasseur (1853-1934) is a French sculptor, student of Augustin-Alexandre Dumont, Jules Thomas and Eugène Delaplanche. Many of his works were awarded at the Salon des Artistes Français and at the Universal Exhibitions of 1889 and 1900. Dimension du socle : L: 10,2 in; D: 10,2 in (L: 26 cm; D: 26 cm).
