About the Item

An important and high quality true pair of French 19th century Louis XVI st. patinated Bronze, Ormolu and marble statues, signed Carrier Belleuse. Each exceptional statues is supported by an octagonal base below a circular socle supporting a round column of Rosso Alicante marble made by Bellman & Ivey of London. The statues are raised by round Alpine Green marble bases below an Ormolu socle, and displays a patinated Bronze female allegorical figure depicting Charity and Abundance. The "Abundance" figure is partially covered in flowing robes and wears fruit and flowers in her hair while standing amid bunches of grapes while holding a container in one hand, and a bunch of grapes aloft in the other, while a charming putti stands at her feet holding up a cup. The "Charity" figure stands near a pile of firewood wearing a long cloak and acorns in her hair. She holds the edge of the cloak above her head with one hand, and an urn in the other, while a putti stands below wrapped in the same cloak for warmth. Albert Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (1824–1887) A renowned French sculptor, a student of David d'Angers at the École des Beaux-Arts. Auguste Rodin worked as his assistant between 1864 and 1870. In 1862 Carrier-Belleuse was one of the founding members of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, and was made an Officier of the Légion d'honneur. He was also made artistic director at the Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres in 1876. He was one of the founding members of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts.
