About the Item

A charming and very high quality French 19th century Louis XVI st. patinated bronze, ormolu, and Notre Dame marble statue signed Clodion. The statue is raised on an elegant Notre Dame marble pedestal with a square base and fine circular central column with a mottled socle support and lovely fluted designs. Above is a beautiful finely detailed maiden draped in a wonderfully executed flowing dress with a lovely foliate band around her arm and a charming cherub tying her feet with a richly chased grapevine. An impressive ormolu staff extends behind them with a remarkable baluster shape and lovely foliate and fluted designs. Statue dimensions: H: 32.75" L: 14.5" D: 13.25" Base dimensions: H: 23.5" L: 15.25" D: 15.25" Claude Michel, aka Clodion (1738 – 1814) A renowned French Master sculptor born in Nancy, France. In 1755, Clodion went to Paris and was a pupil of J. B. Pigalle. In 1759 he obtained the grand prize for sculpture at the Académie Royale and in 1762 he went to Rome. His works were frequently exhibited at the Salon. Clodion's renowned works are displayed all over the world.
