About the Item
Decorate a study, library, or elegant living space with this refined 19th-century French terracotta figure. Sculpted in France circa 1890 and mounted on its original circular walnut base, the artwork, titled “Le Biniou” (Breton for “the bagpipe”), depicts a graceful young woman seated beside a pedestal while holding a traditional bagpipe. The sculptor, Georges Charles Coudray, captured the soft folds of her dress, the delicate lace trim of her sleeves, and the serene expression of concentration with remarkable finesse.
Signed G. Coudray on the back and retaining its brass title plaque on the front, the piece reflects the artist’s mastery of form and his romantic interpretation of rural musical traditions. The terracotta boasts a rich, warm patinated clay finish, beautifully complemented by the walnut base. The work is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use.
Georges Charles Coudray (1862–1932) was a French Impressionist and Modern sculptor, a student of Thomas and Falguière, and a regular exhibitor at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1883 to 1903. Known for his elegant Art Nouveau and orientalist compositions, his works are listed in Benezit and have appeared in major auctions worldwide, achieving prices from a few hundred to over sixty thousand dollars, depending on size and subject.
