Grand Tour Bronze Statue Of Hippomene Throwing Golden Apples, Thiébaut Freres

About the Item

A French bronze statue of Hippomenes throwing apples while racing, titled «Hippomène Lanceur De Pommes D’or» with a «Fumiere et Cie» mark on the base. Except for Hippomenes, Atalanta outran all of her suitors. Hippomenes thought he couldn't compete fairly with Atalanta, so he prayed to Aphrodite for help. Aphrodite handed him three golden apples from her sacred apple tree and told him to drop them one by one to distract Atalanta. Atalanta reclaimed the lead after the first two apples, but Hippomenes won the race when she stopped for the third. Hippomenes eventually won the race and Atalanta's hand by using all three apples and all of his speed. The piece is from the world renowned Thiébaut Freres foundry that operated from 1920 through 1926 as “Thiébaut Freres, Fumiere et Cie”, after which point they ceased to exist. One of the last pieces ever produced in france`s greatest foundry.
