Han Dynasty Figure of an Entertainer

$3,000Asking Price

About

This terra cotta figure depicts a smiling, robed entertainer or singer. During the Han period (206 BCE – 220 CE) large quantities of terra cotta pottery were made in the form of vessels, animals and human figures to prepare for the afterlife. The tombs were quite deep and many items were preserved down to the present, often encased in silt. This figure has a chalky layer of minerals that were deposited on its surface, indicating that the tomb filled with water. The purpose of the terra cotta burial items was to symbolically represent the individual that was buried and his life (including possessions, servants, horses and etc.) and assist in the migration of the soul to its next existence.
