Italian 19th C. Grand Tour Terracotta of a "Fauno Danzante Con Cimbali" ca. 1860

About the Item

Italian 19th Century Grand Tour Terracotta of a "Fauno Danzante con Cimbali" Circa 1860 The statue depicts a satyr dancing and playing; in his right hand he holds the rattlesnakes or cymbals, an instrument similar to castanets, while with his foot he presses the kroupèzion, a percussion instrument that is tied to the foot. This 19th Century Grand Tour Terracotta sculpture is the perfect copy in size and image of the Roman/Hellenic Marble one that is on display at the Uffizi Museum in Florence Italy. During the Grand Tour period (Mid 17th Century to the Late 19th Century) these kind of copies of the Roman/Hellenic and Classical period where quite desirable. In Naples (Italy) 2 important ceramic factories were well known and specialised in Terracotta works, Giustiniani and De Vecchio. A variety of artifacts were reproduced from these 2 factories, plates, tureens and vases were decorated with classical scenes but also reproductions of famous Museum sculptures were made to decorate the villas and parks.
