About the Item
A stunning and very high quality Italian 19th century white Carrara marble statue title Psyche Abandoned on her original Rosso Levanto marble pedestal. The Rosso Levanto column is raised by an octagonal base with a fine circular socle shaped support with a mottled wrap around band. The sculpture represents the moment in the story of Cupid and Psyche where Psyche discovered who Cupid was when she saw him sleeping after they made love but oil from her candle woke him up and he flew away on Angel wings. Psyche was actually pregnant by Cupid who was technically her nephew. She was sad and then went to her sister Venus who was Cupid’s mother to get her help winning back Cupid without realizing Venus’s deceit.
