Italian Grand Tour Bronze Statuette of Caesar Augustus, 19th Century

About the Item

The 1st century AD marble original of this bronze is now in the Vatican. That marble was excavated in 1865 near the Villa of Livia in the Prima Porta hills outside of Rome but there small bronze copies made during Roman times. Augustus was the first emperor of the Roman Empire and is depicted in military attire showing his role as commander. He holds a consular baton in his left arm and raises his right arm in the manner of addressing the troops. The decoration on his breastplate, or cuirass, shows a Parthian man returning to Augustus the legionary standards lost by Marcus Licinius Crassus at Carrhae. This statuette includes a modern Carrara marble base.
