James Hadley Royal Worcester Blush Ivory Farmworker Figures
About the Item
An exceptional pair English aesthetic movement porcelain pair of figurines portraying a farmhand and his belle by renowned potter and artist James Hadley (British, 1837-1903) dated 1896. The figures stand raised on circular rockwork bases with raised tree stump supports and portray a young farmhand dressed in breaches and open shirt with rolled up sleeves and a hat busily sharpening his scythe. The young girl wearing a floral painted short sleeve dress tied around her waist and a wide brimmed bonnet holds a bird nest in her left hand and looks skyward holding her hand above her eyes to cut out the sunlight, probably looking for the mother bird. Both figures are similarly hand decorated in blush ivory coloring with spot coloring and contrasting elements with gilding applied to the scythe, shoes and other elements. Both have printed makers marks to the base along with registration numbers dating the design to 1888 however with makers marks for 1896. The figures are numbered 1292 and 1293.
